PRESS RELEASE - Suspected Residential Burglar Arrested

33-12On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at approximately 3:12 PM, the Palm Springs Police Department received a report of an in progress residential burglary in the 1600 block of Mel Avenue. The victims reported that they returned to their home to discover a broken sliding glass door and property stacked up near the entrance. They then observed the suspect fleeing the residence without the property and driving away in a vehicle. PSPD Patrol Officers responded to the area and began looking for the suspect and the suspect vehicle.
At approximately 3:16 PM, a PSPD Sergeant located the suspect vehicle driving in the area of South Farrell Drive and East Ramon Road. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver and lone occupant, Suspect- Robert Anthony Newton, was detained without incident.
Newton was identified as the suspect in the residential burglary and was subsequently arrested. Newton was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine for the purpose of sales. At the time of his arrest, Newton was out of custody on bail for two separate burglary arrests, two separate possession of a controlled substance arrests, and one possession of stolen property arrest. Newton was later transported to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility. PSPD contacted a judge and requested a bail increase. His bail was increased to $100,000 from $35,000. He will also have to prove the source of his bail money pursuant to 1275.1 (a) P.C..
