Challenge Candidate Raul Ruiz

For His Support for Convicted Murderers of Police Officers

Palm Springs – Police and other law enforcement officers gathered from the Coachella Valley and across Southern California Monday to challenge 36th Congressional District candidate Raul Ruiz on his support for convicted murderers of police officers.

Brought together by the Palm Springs Police Officers' Association, the law enforcement officials questioned why Ruiz has consistently avoided taking responsibility for lauding convicted cop killers Mumia abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier in a 1999 speech. The officers voiced strong skepticism in Ruiz's claim that he was a young student when he made the speech at 27 years old – two years older than the officer who was murdered by Mumia abu-Jamal in Philadelphia.

The officers demanded that Ruiz stop avoiding responsibility for his actions and their impact on law enforcement across the nation. Many said they could not be represented by a candidate who has so clearly voiced anti-police rhetoric in his past.
